EMPATHY
MAP

The Empathy Map helps us understand situations with curiosity. It works best if we intentionally put ourselves in the persona’s position. To better understand your audience’s emotions, zero in on the moment they’re actually experiencing the problem.

The goal is to explore the needs of the user. Think in terms of verbs, not nouns. This keeps our focus on activities for which the user engages rather than solutions.

SIX WORD MEMOIR

Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Larry Smith took the concept a step further and explained that anything in life can be summarized in six words.

Write 6 - Six word memoirs in the blanks provided to describe the problem your project is attempting to solve. Each line is an opportunity to rework your problem statement to be as accurate as possible to one “local problem” your project addresses.

Think quickly! Proper grammar not required!

ASSUMPTION MAP

On sticky notes, write down one assumption per note. Think about things we might assume are true—but may never have been tested or questioned. There are no right or wrong answers. As you finish each sticky note, plot it on the matrix according to how probable the assumption is and the level of risk the assumption carries.

The purpose of this exercise is to uncover hidden assumptions about how is perceived and operates—especially from the perspective of your users and stakeholders

ACTORS
MAP

Using sticky notes, write the name or brief description of people who have played a part in influencing your faith store...one person per sticky note. Plot each sticky note on the graph based on the person’s influence on your faith story. Don’t forget to include people you wish had been part of your story but weren’t.

Reflect on how the four categories shape your story. Note where the influence is strong and where it’s minimal or missing. Do any surprises or anomalies stand out??

In the center, write on sticky notes the messages or beliefs you tell yourself that are a strong part of your story. Do you notice correlations between the influences in each category and their impact on your personal beliefs?
